A Memoir and Field Guide to Adult Incontinence
By Martin Chapotes
Manuscript complete. Now in editing. Over 100,000 words.
The things you need to know. The things you need to hear.
When incontinence became part of my life in my twenties, I wanted more than descriptions of symptoms and products. I wanted to know what an ordinary workday would look like, how to leave the house, how to talk to a partner, and how to stop being afraid of the next accident.
Covered follows me learning those things, bringing a personal story together with the practical details of living in protection.
It also makes room for a more complicated story: shame, comfort, identity, adult regression, and the meanings diapers can hold beyond their practical use.
Read what you need. Skip what you don’t.
Neither the book nor any of its five acts requires reading from front to back. Covered is designed so you can move between chapters and sections, follow what interests you, and return when something becomes relevant.
Start with what you need or want to read. You can read in order if you prefer, but you don’t have to.
INSIDE THE BOOK:
Act I: Losing Control
The first accidents, the search for answers, and the unfamiliar business of needing protection.
Act II: Learning to Live Covered
Products, fit, routines, clothes, work, relationships, intimacy, travel, and the days things go wrong.
Act III: The Story Under the Story
Looking back at experiences, feelings, and shame that took longer to understand.
Act IV: Small Without Becoming Less
ABDL, adult regression, comfort, vulnerability, and consensual caregiving between adults.
Act V: Covered
Stigma, community, seeking care, and making room for a fuller life.
The Toolbox
Checklists, routines, disclosure scripts, travel preparation, a glossary, and resources to return to.
Before you read.
This book is written for adults. It includes frank discussion of bodily functions, adult sexuality, consensual kink, and adult regression. The memoir also discusses emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Heavier material is flagged before you reach it.
Covered offers personal experience and practical perspective. It is not medical advice or therapy.
